ABOUT THE METHOD

Suzuki Method of Actor Training is a form of physical theatre training developed by Tadashi Suzuki in Japan in response to what he needed his performers to be capable of in his productions. The practice has developed over the past 30 years and has been adopted as an approach to training by many companies worldwide.

The Suzuki method works to build an actor’s awareness of their body, in particular, their centre. The method uses exercises that require great amounts of energy, control and concentration. Expressivity and awareness are cultivated by the attempt to disorient the centre of gravity, disrupt the breath and challenge the limits of an actor. The exercises are designed to antagonise and challenge the actor's control of the body, breath, energy and awareness. Suzuki has created rigorous and precise exercises in which perfection is the goal and failure is the only outcome. When failure is guaranteed the performer is free to explore all routes and challenge themselves against themselves rather than others.
